A few days ago the holy month of Ramadan began. What is Ramadan? For those who may not be familiar with it, I thought I'd share a few interesting facts every so often during this Islamic month.
Ramadan is the 9th month on the Islamic lunar calendar. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, this month will rotate over the years and fall on all seasons. For example, about 10 yrs ago Ramadan was in January. This year, it started in mid-August. Next year, it should begin near the beginning of August. It shifts about 2 weeks every year.
During this month, all Muslims must fast from sunrise to sunset. This means no food, no drink(including water), no smoking, and no sex. Children and anyone with medical conditions are excused from fasting. Also, pregnant/breastfeeding women may be excused (they will make up their days within the year). Also forbidden during this month; fighting, cursing, lying, gossiping, etc.
There are two main meals each day. One before the sun rises called "suhoor" and one after the sun sets called "iftar". Eating, drinking, and yes, even some action with your spouse (wink, wink) are allowed after sunset, but before sunrise.
Muslims are encouraged to complete extra prayers and reading of the Quran during this month. Extra prayers are performed at the mosque every night called "Tarawih".
So, is it hard? Actually, no. It really puts things into perspective, especially about food. Think of all the starving people in this world, children who have not eaten anything in days...to fast for part of your day is nothing in comparison and you really appreciate the food God has blessed you with. It truly is "mind over matter". You control the food, rather than the food controlling you.
I will try to share some more interesting facts. If you have any specific questions, feel free to post them in the comments section.
Good night/morning (depending on where you are). ;-)
