Most of us love food. It's a necessity. I've always appreciated food, my Mama raised me right. ;) But, my appreciate for food grew somewhere between converting to Islam and moving to Saudi Arabia. Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset during the holy month of Ramadan. So that in itself has made me truly appreciate food. Once I moved to Saudi Arabia I started to meet people from all over the world. There are a lot of foreigners that live and work in Saudi. Most of these people come from Arab countries, parts of Africa, or parts of Asia. I have meet people who have come from such poor places that they don't know what they will eat day to day. While listening to these stories, I felt ashamed and embarrassed at how easily some of us waste food. Most of us take it for granted. But we should be thankful for the food we have to eat and try our best not to waste it. When so many people are hungry in this world, it is not right for us to just throw things out. This is a personal goal that I have set for myself, and although I am nowhere near perfect, I feel that we've succeeded in having very little waste in my home this past year.
There are some foods that are easy not to waste, like snacks. You know, those particularly tasty ones. Each of us have our own list of favorites that once we start, we can't stop. Here are five of mine...
black olives...in particular, black ones that are pitted. I can easily down a jar/can of these. It's crazy because at one time I thought I hated olives but oh no, I'm in love with them.
chocolate covered pretzels...in particular, the ones from here (located just outside my hometown). My favorite are the milk chocolate, but the dark chocolate are very good too. My hubby and little guy love these as well and when my Mom recently sent us a box, we all fought over them...lol.
cheez-its...the best snack cracker, in my opinion of course. In fifth grade, I had this awesome teacher who would reward us with ten cheez-its for things like winning a game of speed ball. I loved them then , and I love them now.
cherry tomatoes...just like the ones in this picture. We have awesomely fresh produce markets here in Saudi. Hubby and I love buying these on our shopping trips and munching on these before lunch or just as a snack. They're so tasty and healthy too!
indian snacks....in many different variations. My hubby jokes that I must be from India. I love Indian food. It is so tasty and flavorful. Last year, my Indian co-worker got me hooked on Indian snacks. I almost always have a bag or two of these in my house. And they're surprisingly healthy. A lot of them are made from things like lentils. Some are very spicy and some are not. I love these snacks so much that I could do a whole post about them. :)
Honestly, my list does not end here. But, this is called "five things" so I will not embarrass myself by sharing my full list...;)
What are some of your favorite snacks?
