new packaging & a middle eastern dish

Yesterday, I did my weekly grocery store run. I've been eyeing up a new product recently and decided to give it a try. What are normally canned foods are now packaged into mini cartons thanks to one food company here. They have many different foods to chose from; chick peas, corn, beans, and even tomato products. My favorite are chick peas:

These cartons are lightweight, require no tools for opening, and obviously have no rusting issues. They seem to be a healthier choice as products are free of preservatives. The food is ready to eat, too. And, these cartons allow for easy closure after opening so you can safely store any unused product for later.

I love to make salads with chick peas, sweet corn, and kidney beans. I can find all of these foods in this carton packaging.

And even though I'm not opposed to cans, I just feel that this new packaging is going to be my new thing. Besides all the above mentioned, these little cartons are just way cute. ;) Yeah, I'm a sucker for stuff like that.

Another food product this company offers are 3 or 4 different types of fava beans. These beans are very popular in the Middle East. They're cooked with some oil, onions, tomato paste, and spices for a dish called "foul" (pronounced more like "fool"). This is a very healthy and flavorful dish common for breakfast. I'm in love with it and could seriously live off of it. We eat it with bread similar to pita bread....Y-U-M-M-Y!!! It's also VERY affordable. I cheat and buy it from local restaurants, but many people like to make their own. Each region has it's own recipe for this dish. Here are the "Saudi recipe" beans:

Below is a picture of this dish. It can be made with whole beans, mashed beans, or a combination of both. Although I enjoy them prepared almost any way, I prefer when the foul is made with completely mashed fava beans. Toppings can be added such as finely chopped tomatoes and onions or even eggs. The dish below is topped with eggs.

Okay, I'm hungry now....:)

P.S. I had a heck of a time finding an image of foul. I found a lot of recipes but not pictures. Unfortunately, I lost the link for this one.

  1. I like cartons more too. I think it is healthier than cans.
