Although I didn't start twirling baton until I was in 7th grade, I was always in love with it. My older sister took lessons so we had a couple of batons around the house. I would pick them up and play around. What I didn't realize at the time was that I was teaching myself basic twirls. In 7th grade I started lessons, in 8th grade I made the majorette squad at my Jr. High, in 9th grade I made Captain (along side one of my dear friends), in 10th grade I made the High School squad (which back then was not such an easy achievement), and in 12th grade I was Head Majorette (My Best Cuz was Co-Head. I love that we shared that together!). Twirling gave me amazing opportunities. Our band was quite good. We had competitions in Busch Gardens, Niagara Falls, and Disney World. We performed at Penn State Basketball and Pittsburgh Steeler games. Majorettes was a HUGE part of my life, and one that I'm so grateful for! There are many twirlers in my family including my sisters and cousins. And even though twirling is not here in Riyadh, I plan to teach any daughter I may have. I've even had thoughts of opening a baton school here. ;)
I played the flute for eight years. In our school district all students must learn the recorder in 3rd grade. At the end of the year we pick what instrument we'd like to play in 4th grade. I, along with many, many other girls picked the flute. I stuck with it all the way to 12th grade. There was one point in my life when I thought about quitting, I felt I had had enough and majorettes was much more important. But my Mom told me to think carefully. Maybe one day I'd look back and regret. So I thought carefully and decided to stick it out. I'm so glad that I did. I have no regrets! :)
I took many Art classes during High School and was even apart of National Art Honor Society. I love creating, designing, and decorating. I love the Arts and I make sure to supply little guy with all kinds of art supplies so that he can be as creative as he wants to be.
I was in a couple of beauty pageants. This was an experience that I really enjoyed. I never had a goal of becoming Miss America, I just wanted to experience a taste of the pageant world. I learned many, many things and it was a lot of fun. My baton teacher sponsored me. And I had the opportunity to do some volunteer work including a visit to my elementary school and to the elderly in one of our city's homes. Pageants are usually always about the money, but it is also a great experience. I was able to meet girls from all over my state, learn things about stage presence, and meet with a talent agent. I did not win, but I won the experience. ;)
I was a busy, hard working girl. Although I began babysitting at a young age, my first real job was in retail when I was 16 years old. It's nerve racking to be a young 16 year old girl and go through the whole interview process. But that was a big girl step in my life. I got the job and earned a lot of experience. I also had to learn how to juggle all of the above mentioned activities, with school, and a job.
Gosh, I'm so grateful for all this now! :)
What about you? What did you do in High School?
