saudi sunday: mosques

I will attempt to keep this post short and sweet. I spent a good portion of my day playing catch up with my fav blogs. I stayed home with little guy from school today. He wasn't feeling well. But now he's up to his usual things, so I think we shall return to school tomorrow. Why is it that the hours just slip away so fast? We woke up @ 5:30 am (yeah, I know) and here it is, 6pm already. Geez. But anyway, I promised to try and keep up with Saudi Sundays so here I go...

Have you ever been in a small town in America and notice how many churches there are? I know in my hometown in PA there is a church for every few blocks. Well, in Saudi, it's kinda the same idea, except with mosques.

I sometimes joke about how many mosques there are. In my neighborhood alone there are like a bizillion of them. When I was recently describing to a friend where my house was, I told her it's near the mosque. We all started laughing because there are so many.

In Islam there are many ways of doing good deeds. And these deeds are important to Muslims as they can earn extra blessings from God for performing them. For example, if a Muslim builds a water fountain for anyone to use, he/she will earn blessings for any thirsty person who drinks from it. The same holds true for building a mosque. One will earn blessings for every prayer that is performed in a mosque that he/she builds. And this holds true for each person praying. So if one thousand people are praying at any given time, the builder(s) of that mosque can receive one thousand blessings.

Some mosques are simple, but there are many beautifully decorated ones as well. Here is a pic (and sorry for the poor quality of the photo) of one of my favorite mosques in Riyadh...

I wish I had a better picture of this mosque. It's beautiful, with lots of green trimmings. At night, it's all lit up. Maybe this post will inspire me to take some better pictures of all the beautiful mosques here. I will try. :)
