Today was our students' official last day of school. All the homeroom teachers had parties in each class. Students brought lots of yummy things. There were lots of balloons, streamers, confetti, and a couple of classes even brought extra visitors (I saw Barney, Mickey Mouse and a very fun clown). Since I teach ESL to 3 different classes, I made my usual rounds to each class. I talked with the students, ate some yummy, naughty(aka: sugary and fatty) treats, and discussed summer plans. Most students plan to travel. Many, many people travel outside Saudi for at least part of the summer. I'm sure one main reason is that it's so incredibly hot here. It's already reaching 120F and they say this summer will be the hottest, reaching 140F...can you believe it?
Anyway, even though I will truly miss my students, I have to let out a sigh of relief. This year we've had loads of work, more than ever, and to know that we completed it all makes me happy. I don't have to check homework or create any quizzes until this fall. And even though teachers are underpaid and unappreciated, there are great benefits, like having summers off. And in keeping in the spirit of staying positive, I do in fact feel appreciated. I had so many wonderful mothers thank me for all my hard work and so many students give me hugs good-bye while asking if I could teach them in grade 3 next year. Even though I am underpaid, sometimes it's so worth it when you look at your students and see for yourself all the progress you've helped them accomplish.
So here's to a fun, relaxing summer vacation (P.S. Mine actually starts in 3 weeks. I have to keep working until then, but it's all good).
