Islamically the husband must give his bride a dowry. The amount varies. Some dowries are quite simple and modest, others could cause a man his life's savings. ;) It depends on the people involved. Here in Saudi, a woman will also receive a gold set of jewelry from her new husband. This will include a necklace, earrings, ring, bracelet, and a watch. Men are becoming quite creative in how they present these gifts to their new brides. It's usually done in a small, yet formal affair. Above is a very creative example of how a groom may present his gifts. I've often seen the gifts presented in big, beautiful wooden chests which contain even more gifts such as perfumes and oils.
I definitely did not ask hubby for a million riyals, but even if I did I would've had a hard time ruining this very pretty arrangement in order to get my cash. I guess this would be a good way for me to save money though. ;)
